Meet The Owner
Lauren Kelly
Hi there! I'm Lauren Kelly and guess what? Dance is practically in my DNA!
My mom, Darlene Davenport, founded Music in Motion Dance Studio back in February of 1986. Some people joke they were born to dance, but in my case, I was literally dancing before I was even born – Mom was pregnant with me during the first annual performance of Children's Dance Theater and The Music in Motion Dance Company!
That passion for dance has never left me. I took classes here at Music in Motion from the age of 3 all the way to 18, progressing through the Junior & Senior companies. After graduating with honors from the Shenandoah Conservatory with a BFA in Performance & Choreography, I danced professionally in Philadelphia for 10 years while also becoming a Comprehensively Certified Pilates Instructor with Power Pilates.
But after all those amazing experiences, there's no place I'd rather be than back at Music in Motion. I've been thrilled to be the owner and artistic director since 2016. Since taking the helm, I've focused on making Music in Motion an even more welcoming and inspiring space for everyone. That's why we've upgraded the studio with new flooring, barres, and an improved HVAC system (so you can focus on dancing, not sweating!).
But it's not just about the studio itself! I'm also super proud of our thriving non-profit dance company, Children's Dance Theatre. We've expanded performance opportunities like parades, festivals, and sporting events. We've also welcomed new dancers with the addition of a hip-hop team, mini & junior teams, and a performance team, complementing our talented elite senior and apprentice dancers.
We believe in learning from the best! That's why we bring in incredible master teachers like Lloyd A. Boyd (Alvin Ailey & Michael Jackson the Musical!), Rory Freeman (Shaping Sound), and Angela & Colt Prattes (Aladdin tour) for guest artist classes at least three times a year.
And because dance is more than just steps, we're committed to giving back. Through the dance company, we've partnered with amazing charities like The Oncology Unity at CHKD, Ronald McDonald House, The Food Bank of Southeastern VA, D Feet Cancer Foundation, Roc Solid Foundation, and Connect with a Wish. We raise funds through dance performances, drives, and ticket sales, and seeing the joy we bring is truly rewarding.
So, whether you're a seasoned dancer or just starting out, Music in Motion is your place to move, connect, and have a blast! Come say hi – I can't wait to meet you!

Throughout her high school career, Miss Skylar was a member of the First Colonial High School Patriettes Dance Team and by senior year became captain and was even able to choreograph her own performance for their senior night.
After a quite unordinary pandemic graduation in June 2020, Miss Skylar started furthering her education at Tidewater Community College where she is currently studying to get her general studies degree. Once completing this, she plans on continuing to study in child development and the arts.
In her time away from the studio, Miss Skylar can usually be found doing homework, hanging out with her family and friends, going to concerts, antiquing, watching her favorite shows and movies, and going to the bay for sunset picnics. Miss Skylar’s biggest passion has always been dance which makes her so excited to help all her students grow as dancers this year and perform beautifully on recital day - which just happens to be her favorite day of the year!!!
